Sister Mary Alphonsus (Antoinette) Fisher, RDC, a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, died on February 4, 2005 at Good Counsel Convent in White Plains. Sister was born in Waterbury, CT the daughter of Ralph and Rose (DiMangano) Fisher. Sister Mary Alphonsus entered the Sisters of the Divine Compassion on February 2, 1936 and made her final profession on August 13, 1944. She received a B.S. Degree in Biology from Good Counsel College and the MA in Art from Notre Dame University. Sister Mary Alphonsus began her teaching career at Good Counsel Academy and spent 13 years at St. Lawrence O'Toole School in Brewster, NY as a classroom teacher until her appointment at St. Frances deChantal School, Bronx, NY in 1953.
The apex of her career as an Art teacher was spent with students at Good Counsel Academy High School from 1959 until her retirement. Gifted and generous with her talents, she offered private art lessons to young children for over 40 years. From 1958 to 1964 she taught classes in Arts & Crafts in the Fordham University Summer Session. Sister Alice Feeley, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion said, "As a teacher of art, Sr. Mary Alphonsus helped many children and young women discover their abilities to recognize and create beauty." Sister Mary Alphonsus is survived by her religious Sisters of the Divine Compassion, her brother Arthur of Pittsburgh, PA, Frank of Rockville, MD, her sister-in-law, Albina Fisher, nieces and nephews and many devoted friends.
