Sister Dorothy Weber (Sister Mary Matthew) a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion for 68 years, died peacefully on September 19, 2024 at Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
Sister Dorothy was born in New York on October 14, 1938, the daughter of Gregory Weber and Mary Ellen Walsh Weber. She was raised in the Bronx, attending Holy Family Elementary and Preston High School. Sister entered the Sisters of the Divine Compassion on September 3, 1956.
Sr. Dorothy earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Good Counsel College. She continued her studies at Fairfield University and Western Connecticut State College, earning a Master's Degree in Mathematics Education from St Joseph’s College in Connecticut. Sister also held NYS permanent certification in elementary mathematics education.
Sister Dorothy’s first ministry assignment was at St. Anthony’s School in East White Plains. During her time there, she taught third, sixth and seventh graders. In 1962, Sister moved to Brewster, where she taught fourth grade at St. Lawrence O’Toole School until 1965. Sister returned “home” to the Bronx, teaching math to middle school students at St. Francis de Chantal. In 2011, Sister Dorothy retired from her final assignment at St. Anthony’s in White Plains.
Sister was known throughout her religious life for her easy humor and love of the Dodgers baseball team. Famous for her storytelling, Sr. Dorothy often shared great tales about the “good old days” with her friends Sisters Pat Smith and Anne Kniphuisen. The memories she cherished most, though, were the times she spent with her dear and loving family at their homes and at the Jersey Shore. Her family was one of the greatest joys of Sr. Dorothy’s life.
Sister Dorothy is survived by her Sisters of the Divine Compassion, and her sisters Kathleen Furlong and Ann Connell, her brother Gregory, nieces Loretta, Patricia Jane (PJ), Margaret, Regina, and Mary Ellen, nephews Keith, Lawrence, Matthew, Daniel, Gregory, Ryan, and George and many grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Gregory and Mary Ellen Weber and her sisters Eileen, Mary Ellen, Patricia and Loretta.
Sr. Dorothy’s wake will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at the Chapel of the Divine Compassion in White Plains. A Welcoming Ritual will begin at 10:30 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in White Plains following the Liturgy. McMahon, Lyon and Hartnett Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, 52 N. Broadway, White Plains, NY 10603.
